Lot 173: Porcelain Block  Color: Tan  Description: The Southern Porcelain Company in Kaolin, South Carolina produced one of the earliest styles of insulators, the block. This example appears unused and in mint condition. There is a small nub in the wire groove that would surely have broken off if a lineman had tried to slip a wire into it. These blocks are typically found with one or two slashed lines or an "X". This one has neither and has an odd pattern of slashed lines on one section of the top as can be seen in View 3. No one has determined what these were for. On the back of the block, someone wrote "3AJ" using a black felt pen. Perhaps this was a catalog number printed by a museum or a hobbyist. It's quite common for these blocks to be damaged or repaired. Worth a premium over a damaged one.
