Lot 139: CD 723.3 {Unembossed} [010] Color: Blue Aqua w/ Wood Cover Description: This insulator is in great condition for a Wade, with a nearly perfect outside surface and minimal chipping at the base. This is known as the "Smooth Wade" style. These early threadless insulators were produced around the 1860s and were designed for use with a wooden "shield" to prevent "Indian depredations", as reported in trade journals. The addition of an amber worm that winds throughout the insulator makes it unusual. This lot includes three parts of a wooden cover, and you can see how it slips over the insulator. It is not known whether these pieces of wooden cover were actually used on this specific insulator. [UPDATE: We don't even know if they were originally part of the same cover.] It still makes a great display piece showing how the insulator fits inside the cover. Estimate: $400 - $500 Open: $1 Price Realized: $715 |
