Lot 165: Glass Roofing Tile Color: Sun-Colored Amethyst Description: A supportive document states: "The interlocking design of the glass allowed the tiles to link to each other and the surrounding clay tiles, stay waterproof, and offer natural light. These formed a 4-foot-long by 60-foot-wide skylight for the Engineering Shops building at the University of Colorado, Boulder." The tile is embossed "LUDOWICI CHICAGO / PATENT No 283126" as seen in view 2. It is 9" W x 16.25" L x 2" D and weighs 6 lbs. 14 oz. It dates circa 1880's. The document also says: "Sunlight reacting with the manganese additive in the once clear glass caused the tiles to develop a purple hue over time." True "Sun-Colored Amethyst" - this can be seen with the rich purple color on the bottom and the clear color on the top. While not an insulator, if a big tile of purple glass from the 1880s excites you, this is the piece for you! Estimate: $100 - $200 Open: $1 Current Bid: $120 |
