Lot 167: Porcelain Strain w/ Wires  Color: Mottled Brown  Description: This is an excellent example of how wires were attached to "Johnny Balls" such that they stayed insulated from each other. However, what we found to be most interesting was the way the wires were woven together to make a strong "eye" loop. Each strand of the wire was wrapped around the main wire for about an inch, and then the next strand was separated out and wrapped around the wire until all the strands were wrapped around. No doubt this was a very strong way to splice the wire together. The back of this insulator has two areas that are 1 1/2" long by 1/4" wide. One side appears to be a factory flaw, where the glaze did not completely cover the insulator. The other side appears to have been chipped. To us, the most unique part of this is to examine how the strands of the wire were woven together to make the strong "eye" and see how this was actually used in service.
