Lot 150: Brooks' Patent Ramshorn  Color: (Glass insert) Light Aqua  Description: Embossed "BROOKS' / PAT / AUG 6 / 1867". David Brooks patented several styles of these insulators. This one is marked with the patent date for a hook cemented into a glass insert with sulfur, which in turn is cemented into an iron case. [  UPDATE: see view 3 for a picture of the insert] Brooks' insulators were very well received in the day, however they were superseded as pin type insulators gained momentum. The glass inserts are found in aqua and SCA colors. Many of these items were used on the CPRR right of way from Utah to California. Wooden crossarms were attached to poles and trees, holes were drilled into the bottom of the crossarms, and the insulators were mounted into the holes. The insert is in perfect condition, as is the rest of the insulator. An odd and interesting ramshorn style!
