Lot 11: THE TELEGRAPH IN AMERICA, JAMES D. REID, 1879  Description: Fair to good condition. Binding intact. All pages are in very good shape but slightly yellowed. THE TELEGRAPH IN AMERICA. ITS FOUNDERS AND NOTED MEN. BY JAMES D. REID. NEW YORK. DERBY BROTHERS. 1879. 846 pages. A fantastic reference book! There are over 40 engravings including L. G. Tillotson, Marshall Lefferts, Jeptha H. Wade, Frank L. Pope, Thomas A. Edison. The book documents the history of over 40 telegraph companies such as the Magnetic Telegraph Company, Atlantic and Ohio Telegraph Company, New York and Erie Telegraph company, Dominion Telegraph Company, American Telegraph Company, and Western Union Telegraph Company. Also included is information on the men behind the companies, the locations of the lines, construction details and in some cases the insulators used. There are diagrams of many insulators and how they were used, including: the two simple glass plates; the bureau knob (CD 780); straight grooved glass block (CD 1006); the egg insulator (CD 700); Lefferts style hook; glass block (CD 1000); the "Katchko hook" and glass saucer; the house insulator; various other hook styles including the Kenosha hook, Brooks, and Goodyear; the "Cauvet insulator"; and screw glass insulator of the California Electrical Construction and Maintenance Company (CD 123). Also shown is CD 127 (now reassigned CD 127.1 in 2019) and more! This is a "priceless" reference book written 140 years ago!
