Lot 232: Glass Busbar Support / Cutout  Description: Excellent condition, perhaps not even used! A massive piece of glass and metal weighing 6 1/2 pounds and measuring 10 1/2" long and 4" in diameter. The glass piece alone is 7 1/2" long. The base is embossed R.5070. A drawing of a nearly identical item dated 1905 described it as a "Glass Insulator For 13,200-Volt Bus Bar Support. Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co." The drawing did not show any fittings on the insulator, however it is possible that different types of copper fittings might be cemented in place for different functions. There is also a hard rubber cushion between the copper "fingers" to absorb mechanical shock, thus perhaps indicating its possible use as a cutout rather than a busbar insulator. This item came from a flea market in California and was likely used in a street railway substation. Only a few of these are known, and the presence of the copper insert makes this much more desirable than the glass-only units.
