CD 116 DEC. 19, 1871, Blue Aqua; Uncommon and overlooked!

Lot 47: CD 116 DEC. 19, 1871 [010]  Color: Blue Aqua  Description: There may be evidence of an "A.U." blot out, but we'll list this as a Dec. 19, 1871 primary embossing. Researchers have always been puzzled by the "Patent Applied For" embossing, as no patent has been found for this style. The CD 116's were produced by both Hemingray and Brookfield. This may be a transition-embossed mold, as the bold, prism "PATENT/MAY 2, 1893" embossing is significantly different in style than the rest of the embossing. This may indicate that the embossing was added to a smooth base mold when the drip points were added. It is possible that this style was produced by modifying a CD 121.4 mold. About very near mint. An uncommon style that is often overlooked!
